Survived by his wife of 5 years in Oct., Nancy Cleary VanSchaffel; daughter, Megan (Chris) DeTaeye of Newark; son, Justin E. of Valdosta, GA; grandchildren, Cheyenne, Gage, Ty & Alexander; his parents, Carl & Marian VanSchaffel of Newark; brothers, James (Peg) and John, and sister, Julie (Mike) Chamberlin, all of Newark; nieces & nephews. Predeceased by his sister, Jackie Smith, in 2002. Joel was a millwright & business agent for Local 1163 in Syracuse.  Services will be private and by invitation only.
